Within Material d we highlight Isabella Mellado’s work “Dance for the Lord of the Dead.” This series of paintings displayed at the Povos booth explored the delicate balance between control and surrender, and is based on a deeply personal performance in a Puerto Rican forest. There, in the middle of the Material room, Mellado danced barefoot, masked, and holding a golden skeleton adorned with gems on her nails—captured on camera by her sister as the song of coquís and the buzz of insects echoed through the trees. This moment is a powerful meditation on mortality, ritual, and the strength found in embracing the unknown.
