Back To School: An exploration of contemporary Midwestern surrealism - Povos Downtown 600 W Van Buren St
Povos is thrilled to celebrate its return to programming and expansion to a second location with Back to School, an exploration of contemporary midwestern surrealism, and an homage to the Chicago School. The inaugural exhibition of Povos Downtown presents work from eight Chicago-based artists and the new Povos roster. Featuring work from Povos regulars including Carolina Pereira, Eleonore Zurawski, and Griffin Plumer, Back to School also introduces Julia Signe, Kate Morrick, and Abraham Cone, who all have solo exhibitions with the gallery forthcoming.
All of the participating artists identify as "Chicago Artists." The vast majority of them have midwestern roots, and with that claim, connect with a lineage of magically succinct image makers. All having studied and internalized both the lessons of the Chicago School and its Surrealist inspirations–and that which came after–the Povos artists speak in distinctly contemporary modes of expression. Grounding whimsical imagery in familiar landscapes, rituals, and materials, Back to School reminds the viewer, just as the artist, that we are here once more, together, to learn.
