Thérèse Mulgrew grew up just outside of Dubuque, Iowa. Influenced by her mother’s surreal oil paintings and her grandmother’s impressionist still lifes, she began to cultivate her own style which focuses mainly on depicting large-scale portraits and nostalgic still life in oil paint. Her paintings represent an attempt to explore vulnerability, intimacy and history. She graduated from the University of Iowa as an English literature major in 2013, though she moved to NYC shortly afterwards where she studied at The Art Students League and New York Studio School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture. She now lives and works in Chicago and has exhibited at James Cohan (NYC), Povos Gallery (Chicago), PIERMARQ (Sydney), Mey Gallery (LA), Simchowitz (LA), Freight + Volume (NYC), and the Dubuque Museum of Art, amongst others. She has several international exhibitions and fair presentations planned for 2025.
